How to keep your voice when using AI
· 2 Min Read · By Riley Daniels
I have tried to make AI sound like me more times than I want to admit. For a long stretch, everything it handed back read like a press release trying to write a diary entry. Polished, confident, and nothing like me.
It is fixable. And it matters more than it sounds, because your people followed you. Not the average of the whole internet, which is roughly what AI sounds like until you tell it otherwise.
Why your voice slips
AI learned from everyone, so left alone it writes like everyone. Pleasant, and completely forgettable. The small things that make you sound like a person (how you open, the joke you always make, the one word you lean on too hard) get sanded right off.
Your people clock it. They might not say “this feels like AI,” but they feel it, and they keep scrolling.
The fix is boringly simple
Tell the AI how you write, once, and make it work from that every time. That short description is a voice file. You don’t write it from scratch. The AI builds it from stuff you’ve already posted, and you fix what it gets wrong.
I made the free one-pager that walks you through it in about ten minutes. Grab that, then come back for the habits below.
Five habits that keep you sounding like you
-
Feed it your words, not adjectives. “Make it fun and casual” gets you a stranger’s idea of fun. Paste three to five real captions instead. Your actual writing beats any description of it.
-
Guard your first line and your sign-off. That’s where your voice lives hardest. Let AI draft the soggy middle if you want. Write the hook and the ending yourself, or rewrite them until they sound like you again.
-
Keep a “never say” list. Every creator has words the AI reaches for that they would never type. Unlock. Elevate. Game-changer. Write yours down and hand them over. Half of sounding human is just deleting the robot words.
-
Read it out loud before it goes out. If you wouldn’t say it to a friend, don’t post it. That one check catches most of the drift.
-
Rebuild it every few months. Your voice moves. The file goes stale. Ten minutes to refresh it when your captions start feeling a little off.
The honest version
AI is great for the business side. Drafting faster, sorting the boring stuff, getting you off a blank page at 11pm. It should not be the thing that is you to your people. The tools can be great, but you still have to learn how to use them, and sounding like yourself is the one part no tool does for you.
Tools, not tricks. Keep your voice.
Want to build your voice file? About ten minutes, works in Claude or ChatGPT. Then go sound like yourself. That part was never the hard bit.
